Dr Ruth Keenan
Clinical Psychologist
Dr Ruth Keenan is a fully qualified Clinical Psychologist, registered with the HCPC. She is an experienced clinician who is available to see young people and their parents or carers. Please note Ruth is only offering online appointments at present.
The pandemic has had a disproportionately negative impact on children and young people resulting in many families struggling to know how best to meet their needs. Ruth works from an integrative perspective, using a range of psychological theories and models to help young people and their families make sense of the difficulties that they may be presenting with. This includes anxiety, difficulties with emotional regulation, recovery from traumatic events and adjustment following significant life changes. She provides a safe therapeutic space from within which a range of coping strategies can be explored. Ruth is experienced in identifying where neurodevelopmental vulnerability may be impacting on a young person but does not provide formalised assessment for ADHD or Autism Spectrum Condition.
Ruth worked in an NHS specialist complex trauma service for ten years where she gained expertise in working therapeutically with individuals who have experienced trauma including childhood abuse and neglect. She also has post qualification experience within child and adolescent mental health services. Ruth has a specialist interest in helping people recover from the impact of trauma, however this may present.
Ruth completed her undergraduate degree (MA Hons) in Psychology at the University of Glasgow in 1999 and went on to gain her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy) in 2005. Since then, she has worked within a range of mental health settings in the NHS.
Ruth has training and experience in providing clinical supervision and has also delivered teaching and training at a doctoral level as well as to other professionals both with the NHS and third sector. Ruth currently works part time for the NHS within a maternity and neonatal psychological interventions service.
